Your first week in Japan: setting up your trash schedule

Jul 20, 2026 ยท 4 min read

You just moved in, the boxes are everywhere, and the trash is already piling up. Getting your garbage sorted in the first week saves you a month of confusion. Here is the short version.

Find your ward's schedule

Collection days are set by your city ward, not your building. When you register your address at the city office, you usually get a garbage calendar, sometimes with an English version. It lists which category goes out on which day.

Learn your categories

Most areas run a rotating weekly pattern, something like burnable twice a week, recyclables once, non-burnable once or twice a month. Pin the calendar somewhere you will actually see it.

Get your bags right

Many wards require designated trash bags sold at supermarkets and convenience stores, often color-coded by category. The wrong bag can get your trash left behind. Buy a few of each on your first shop.

Know the morning rule

Trash goes out on the morning of collection, usually before 8 in the morning, not the night before. Putting it out early invites crows and a warning sticker.

Ask a neighbor or your building manager where the collection point is. It is often a netted spot near the entrance, and the exact location is rarely written down anywhere.

Once you are set up, Gomi Guide keeps the schedule and the categories in your pocket, so a busy morning never catches you out.
